Proven Tutoring to Accelerate Learning

What do proven tutoring models look like?

 

Guidance from the Education Department on effective tutoring models includes the use of evidence-based programs paired with high-quality training and support. A recent webisode hosted by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) featured effective programs and recommendations to accelerate student learning.

 

One example comes from Beard Elementary School in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The school has implemented Lindamood-Bell’s high dosage tutoring model since 2017. Principal Pam Siebenmorgen describes the secret to their success: 

 

“In my 35 years in education, I’ve never seen anything as powerful as what I’ve seen with Lindamood-Bell…[Results are due to] teachers doing [the program]with fidelity, the coaching support, and the confidence [the program] has built in our students.”

 

The program includes daily, small-group instruction in skills such as phonemic awareness, symbol imagery, and concept imagery as a foundation for reading and comprehension skills. Often these skills lag behind for disadvantaged students, or certainly for students who lost substantial instruction time during the pandemic.     

 

Based on successes like Beard Elementary, Lindamood-Bell was selected as a coalition partner with ProvenTutoring.org. The coalition was formed out of Johns Hopkins’ Center for Research and Reform in Education, along with the Success for All Foundation. It was created to help educators learn about and access tutoring programs proven in rigorous research to substantially increase the achievement of students performing far below grade level due to COVID school closures or other factors.
