Lindamood-Bell Selected by the Indiana Department of Education as a School Improvement Technical Assistance Partner

Lindamood-Bell is proud to have been selected by the Indiana Department of Education to be a School Improvement Technical Assistance Partner. Lindamood-Bell has extensive experience in partnering with schools to increase student achievement. 

Since 1986, Lindamood-Bell has worked with schools, educators, and students to implement programs and organizational processes that develop or remediate literacy skills. We help educators provide evidence-based, sensory-cognitive instruction as a basis for developing phonemic awareness, phonics, orthographic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. 

Our partnerships with schools have succeeded in closing the achievement gap by providing explicit, cumulative, and systematic instruction in this methodology. We have substantial evidence of effectiveness with turning around low-performing schools and increasing reading proficiency with struggling readers, including students with dyslexia and in special education.

Fort Smith Public Schools 

Fort Smith Public Schools in Fort Smith, Arkansas, serves a large percentage of students who are at-risk of reading failure. Beginning in the 2017-18 school year, Fort Smith Public Schools implemented Lindamood-Bell instruction to address the specific needs of dyslexic students and provide a solid foundation for all early learners. The partnership has been cost-effective for schools and life-changing for students. Read about their successful Summer Reading Program and download their results here.

 

Pueblo City Schools

Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing were selected by Pueblo City Schools (PCS) to address decoding and comprehension instruction. It was used for 10 years, ending with a peer-reviewed, independent impact evaluation study examining the effects of its usage with 3rd-5th grade students (Sadoski & Willson, 2006). The statewide comparison yielded statistically significant comparative results for Pueblo’s grades 3-5, longitudinally tracking comparative statewide growth on the Colorado State Assessment Program (CSAP) as a dependent measure of success. This Title I urban district, with 32 elementary schools, went from the bottom of Colorado’s Title I urban school districts to the top. The analysis included all SES, minority, and special education groups. The study exceeded the highest of evidence-based standards as it was not restricted based on sample size, nor randomized. Haskin Elementary 

As an approved provider in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Education, the Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing programs were used to address decoding and language comprehension needs of students at Haskin Elementary, in Center, Colorado as part of the Federal School Improvement Grant initiative. Over three years, Haskin Elementary was the only school in the state to progress from “turnaround” status (the lowest 5% in the state) to “performance” status, the highest accountability metric in the state. This is especially notable since Haskin was a Title I school (over 90% minority, with free and reduced lunch), and over 50% speaking English as a Second Language. Reading Gains with Intensive Summer Camp

Traditional In-person Summer School 

Laurens County schools in Dublin, GA implemented an intensive, in-person summer reading camp. During the 2019 Summer School, Laurens County implemented Lindamood-Bell® instruction to address the specific needs of this student population. Data is available on 21 students who received an average of 60.7 hours of primarily Seeing Stars instruction to develop symbol imagery for reading. The instruction was delivered by Laurens County teachers who received professional development in the programs. Student gains were measured with a battery of reading assessments.

On average, Seeing Stars students achieved significant improvements in reading. Their pre to post-test results were statistically significant on nearly all measures. The results of this study illustrate that Lindamood-Bell instruction in the Seeing Stars program leads to improved reading, which is essential to achieving success with school curricula.

Online Summer Camp 

Many schools are delivering online instruction to struggling readers. Unfortunately, there is a lack of research on the impact of online small-group reading intervention, leaving educators without an evidence-based model. Results from an online summer reading camp demonstrate a promising model to replicate.

Over four weeks in the summer of 2020, Lindamood-Bell provided job-embedded PD to a district implementing small-group instruction using the Seeing Stars® program. The district targeted 100 students performing in the lowest quartile on the MAP assessment to receive the daily intensive intervention.  The instruction was delivered by 35 Fort Smith Public Schools teachers who received professional development in the program authored by LindamoodBell’s founders.

A battery of nationally normed reading assessments measured student gains. Data is available on 14 students receiving an average of 37 hours of instruction. Students made substantial gains in symbol imagery, word attack, and word recognition, skills necessary for establishing independent readers. These gains correlate to nearly a year’s worth of age and grade level growth.

Case Study | Job-Embedded PD makes the difference in Fulton County, Georgia

In 2019, Fulton County Schools in Atlanta, Georgia began to address their ongoing learning gaps in literacy with sensory-cognitive instruction. Proven Tutoring to Accelerate Learning

What do proven tutoring models look like?

 

Guidance from the Education Department on effective tutoring models includes the use of evidence-based programs paired with high-quality training and support. A recent webisode hosted by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) featured effective programs and recommendations to accelerate student learning.

 

One example comes from Beard Elementary School in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The school has implemented Lindamood-Bell’s high dosage tutoring model since 2017. Principal Pam Siebenmorgen describes the secret to their success: 

 

“In my 35 years in education, I’ve never seen anything as powerful as what I’ve seen with Lindamood-Bell…[Results are due to] teachers doing [the program]with fidelity, the coaching support, and the confidence [the program] has built in our students.”

 

The program includes daily, small-group instruction in skills such as phonemic awareness, symbol imagery, and concept imagery as a foundation for reading and comprehension skills. Often these skills lag behind for disadvantaged students, or certainly for students who lost substantial instruction time during the pandemic.     

 

Based on successes like Beard Elementary, Lindamood-Bell was selected as a coalition partner with ProvenTutoring.org. The coalition was formed out of Johns Hopkins’ Center for Research and Reform in Education, along with the Success for All Foundation. It was created to help educators learn about and access tutoring programs proven in rigorous research to substantially increase the achievement of students performing far below grade level due to COVID school closures or other factors.
