Beyond Expectations: Language Comprehension and Thinking for State Standards-Based Curriculum

English Language Arts Standards challenge students to comprehend and think, rather than remember facts. While the standards outline clear goals by grade level, the method for teaching students how to comprehend is not clear, even for students receiving intervention. High expectations and the opportunity to practice are simply not enough for many learners.

Clinical research over the last thirty years indicates there is a separate comprehension weakness that is rarely identified. This weakness often undermines the reading process. It is a weakness, based in the sensory system, in creating an imaged gestalt or “whole.”

In this 30 minute webinar, we will describe how reading comprehension correlates with state standards curriculum and how teachers can explicitly develop the skills students need.
