Supporting the Hawai‘i State Department of Education to Empower Schools Nā Hopena A‘o (HĀ)

Feb 6, 2024

Lindamood-Bell is very pleased to announce its selection by the Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE) to support schools under the COMPREHENSIVE ASSISTANCE, TRAINING, AND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND SERVICES (CATERS) program.

The primary objective of the HIDOE is to empower schools and provide access to various resources, tools, supports, and assistance focused on Nā Hopena A‘o (HĀ), a department-wide framework to develop the skills, behaviors, and dispositions that are reminiscent of Hawaiʻi’s unique context, and to honor the qualities and values of the indigenous language and culture of Hawaiʻi.  Goals under this framework include:

  • Goal 1: Student Success
  • Goal 2: Staff Success
  • Goal 3: Successful Systems of Support

Evidence-based Interventions

LiPS® develops phonemic awareness, reading, spelling, and speech. Students discover the physical characteristics of each phoneme and use this kinesthetic feedback to verify sounds within words.

Seeing Stars® develops symbol imagery as a foundational skill for reading. Often a critical missing piece in popular reading and dyslexia interventions, symbol imagery is explicitly and systematically developed for orthographic mapping, fast word retrieval, fluency, and global reading skills. Seeing Stars aligns with all instructional principles and components of a structured literacy approach (SLA). However, unlike many SLA interventions that focus predominantly on or overemphasize phonemic awareness, Seeing Stars systematically integrates phonological AND orthographic processing necessary for automaticity in word reading skills.

Visualizing and Verbalizing® develops concept imagery as a foundational skill for language comprehension and higher-order thinking. The program provides systematic and explicit instruction based on how the brain processes language for comprehension, stimulating the sensory-cognitive skill of mental imagery. This differs from typical SLA approaches based primarily on the Simple View of Reading since many students may struggle with reading comprehension despite good decoding and oral vocabulary skills.

Talkies® is the primer to the Visualizing and Verbalizing® program for students who need simpler, smaller steps of instruction to establish the imagery-language connection.

On Cloud Nine® develops the ability to image and verbalize the concepts and processes of math. Concept imagery and numeral imagery are integrated with language to improve both mathematical reasoning and mathematical computation.

Sustained Professional Development

Lindamood-Bell offers levels of professional development, which are vital components for quality instruction with fidelity. Most programs provide only one- to two-day inservices, with minimal or no follow-up support. Evidence-based practices require rigorous, ongoing professional learning. After educators complete a comprehensive workshop, Lindamood-Bell provides job-embedded coaching throughout the year, including extended school year sessions and summer academies. Coaching is conducted online while teachers work directly with students. This enables instructional experts to model the steps and provide feedback to teachers for continuous improvement. Needs Assessment

To provide comprehensive services under the CATERS plan, we provide a needs assessment to customize a model that meets each school’s specific and unique needs. We then design our programs and services to address improvement areas and develop and implement successful strategies that build school sustainability and reflect student academic achievements.

High Impact Tutoring

We offer online, high-impact tutoring to accelerate learning for students behind in reading or math due to lost learning or other factors. Through our virtual Learning Center on Campus (LCOC) model, our Lindamood-Bell Tutoring Corps provides explicit and systematic instruction in our evidence-based approach.

We look forward to working with HIDOE to empower Hawai‘i schools.

📚 Teaching students to connect language with imagery strengthens reading skills and comprehension.

At Lindamood-Bell, our approach is grounded in Dual Coding Theory (DCT), a cognitive framework explaining how the brain processes information. Our founders’ programs, including Seeing Stars for reading and spelling and Visualizing and Verbalizing for comprehension and critical thinking, apply these principles through sensory-cognitive instruction.
