Fulton County Schools—K-5 Elementary Students
Georgia, Progress Monitoring, Special Education
Fulton County Schools in Georgia serves a large percentage of students who are at-risk of reading failure. During the 2019- 20 school year, Fulton County implemented Lindamood-Bell® instruction to address the specific needs of its Special Education students. 263 students received 1 semester of small-group Seeing Stars instruction to develop symbol imagery for reading. Instruction was delivered by Fulton County teachers who received professional development in the programs created by Lindamood-Bell’s founders. Student gains were measured with the iReady Reading Assessment.
RESULTS
On average, Seeing Stars students achieved significant improvements in reading. They made larger-scale scored gains than the control group on all measures. Additionally, intervention students met 110% of typical growth and 52% of stretch growth. The results of this study illustrate that Lindamood-Bell instruction in the Seeing Stars program leads to improved reading, which is essential to achieving success with school curricula.
