from a small Learning Center in San Luis Obispo, CA
to an organization with over 60 Learning Centers
and dozens of seasonal clinics.
When you open our door you’ll notice

We are committed to teaching
all children and adults to read and comprehend. Our research-validated instruction is our foundation.

What To Expect
Learn More About Our Instruction
Our instruction helps a wide range of individuals, children & adults, by developing the language processing
that is critical to becoming a proficient learner.
Problem
Difficulty with reading words on the page, recognizing sight words, reading fluency, and spelling. Students with these symptoms may be labeled as dyslexic.
Solution
Establish the underlying skills of symbol imagery, phoneme awareness, and orthographic processing.
Problem
Difficulty with understanding, remembering, inferring, following directions, and critical thinking from written and oral material.
Solution
Develop concept imagery to create mental representations for oral and written language. (Like making a movie in your mind’s eye.)
Problem
Difficulty holding math facts, functional concepts, as well as weak word problem solving skills.
Solution
Apply symbol and concept imagery to arithmetic and mathematical reasoning. This improves computational skills and the ability to solve word problems.
Lindamood-Bell does not diagnose, or label, any individuals we work with; however, many students have come to us with a previous diagnosis.
These self-reported labels have included:
Dyslexia, Hyperlexia, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) {Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)}, Specific Learning Disability; Others:Down Syndrome, CAPD, Fragile X, TBI, Deaf, Gifted
Many adults experience weakness in one or more sensory-cognitive areas. These challenges may affect their work performance and limit their opportunities for advancement.
Instruction is differentiated and specific to the adult student’s need. Many of our adult students find great success.

As Lindamood-Bell celebrates its 40th anniversary, Emily will share the story of how our company began right here in San Luis Obispo in 1986 and has grown to serve students and families across the country and around the world.

Our next milestone takes us to 1992!
📍 1992: First Learning Center outside of San Luis Obispo opens in Sacramento, California
Six years after Lindamood-Bell was founded, we expanded beyond our San Luis Obispo roots with the opening of a Learning Center in Sacramento.
It was an important step in our growth, bringing Lindamood-Bell’s one-to-one, individualized instruction to more students and families.

As we continue looking back at the milestones that have shaped Lindamood-Bell, we’re returning to where it all began.
📖 1986: Nanci Bell publishes Visualizing and Verbalizing®
The same year Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes was founded, co-founder Nanci Bell published Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking®, introducing an approach designed to develop concept imagery, the ability to create an imaged gestalt from language.
The program grew from Nanci’s work with students who could read words but struggled to understand, remember, and think critically about what they read.
Today, Visualizing and Verbalizing® remains central to our approach to developing language comprehension and higher-order thinking skills.

Pat Lindamood and Nanci Bell co-founded Lindamood-Bell with a shared belief that all students can be taught to read to their potential. From the beginning, our approach was grounded in the understanding that reading is a sensory-cognitive process and that the underlying skills can be developed.
What began 40 years ago has grown into a journey we’re excited to revisit and share with you.
