Kodiak Island School Borough
Alaska, Seeing Stars, Summer School
Kodiak Island School Borough (KISB) in Kodiak, Alaska, serves a large percentage of students who are at-risk of reading failure. During the summer of 2016, KISB implemented Lindamood-Bell® instruction to address the specific needs of this student population. 31 students received an average of 53 hours of Seeing Stars small group, intensive instruction to develop symbol imagery for reading. Instruction was delivered by KISB teachers who received professional development in the program developed by Lindamood-Bell’s founders. Student gains were measured with a battery of reading assessments.
RESULTS
Seeing Stars students achieved statistically significant improvements in all areas of reading. They made large standard score changes on Symbol Imagery, Word Attack, and Reading Accuracy. These improvements resulted in statistically significant gains in Reading Fluency and moved students from below normal to the normal range in Reading Comprehension. Results of this study illustrate that Lindamood-Bell instruction in the Seeing Stars program leads to improved reading, which is essential to achieving success with school curricula.
