Colorado Students Receiving Lindamood-Bell® Instruction Outperform State in English Language Arts

Background
Haskin Elementary School in Center, Colorado, serves a large percentage of students who are at-risk of reading failure. During the 2015-16 school year, Haskin implemented Lindamood-Bell® instruction to address the specific needs of this student population. At-risk students received Seeing Stars or Visualizing and Verbalizing instruction to develop symbol imagery or concept imagery for reading or comprehension. All students received Lindamood-Bell instruction in their regular classroom settings as well. Instruction was delivered by Haskin teachers who received professional development in the Lindamood-Bell programs. Change in the percent of Haskin students who demonstrated readiness for the next grade level on the state English language arts test (based on Common Core State Standards) was compared to the change made by the state.

Results
Haskin students outperformed the state at every grade level. In 3rd grade, Haskin students went from 31% of their students meeting or exceeding expectations in 2015 to 45% in 2016, whereas the state went from about 38% to 37%. The results of this study illustrate that Lindamood-Bell instruction in the Seeing Stars or Visualizing and Verbalizing programs lead to improved reading or comprehension, which is essential to achieving success with school curricula.
