Colorado Special Education Students Receiving Lindamood-Bell® Instruction Score Above Benchmark in Reading

Background
San Luis Valley Board of Cooperative Educational Services (SLV BOCES) in south central Colorado serves a large percentage of students who are at-risk of reading failure. During the 2013-14 to 2015-16 school years, SLV BOCES implemented Lindamood-Bell instruction to address the specific needs of this student population. This project was funded by a Colorado Department of Education grant, Increasing Achievement and Growth Grant: Literacy for All Students with Disabilities, pursuant to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Ten 4th grade and ten 5th grade students received an average of 113 and 141 hours of Seeing Stars or Visualizing and Verbalizing instruction to develop symbol imagery or concept imagery for reading or comprehension. These students were either in Special Education or in need of Special Education services. Instruction was delivered by SLV BOCES teachers who received professional development in the Lindamood-Bell programs. Progress was measured with a reading recall assessment and the results were compared to benchmarks based on published norms.

Results
On average, Lindamood-Bell students scored above benchmark in the spring on this measure of reading. Fall to spring results were statistically significant for both grade levels. The results of this study illustrate that Lindamood-Bell instruction in the Seeing Stars or Visualizing and Verbalizing programs lead to improved reading or comprehension, which is essential to achieving success with school curricula.
